If Apple decides it will not be compatible with newer computers, it won't. Pro Tools First, okay maybe, Pro Tools plain, ? It seems like one of those Mercedes Smart cars, lol! If you haven't got PT 11 (or greater yet), then you haven't experienced even what that does for you and the new lease for life that it offers your older computer system. The new DAW won't get you anything you don't already have. So in the end, if you have PT 11, and have a range of stuff installed as I know you do (Stylus, Omnisphere etc.) and it all works, then not much to worry about. He also had a few other bells and whistles (like a Fairlight) so he wasn't depending on soft synths either. likely wouldn't have won him any more commercial spots that he already did). ![]() was just wasted money, and didn't really make a difference to anything that he did (i.e. It might have been cool to keep up with the latest and greatest, but investing in a new TDM system (at that time) and a new mac that would run OS X etc. Even though it was long in the tooth at that point, he never had any problems. He had a bombproof clean backup of his system drive with PT installed on it, and every few weeks he would do a clean install of that into his system. In my interning experience (in 2006/2007) one of the experienced composers in the music house had a pro tools mix system that ran on OX 9 (when we were already at OS X 10.6) and he would just use that. So what Paulie said resonates too - its important to figure out what you do and what you need for it. Yes it will take you some time to learn the new system, but even that is minimal with free youtube videos and and etc. I can still edit audio in Logic, and I can still program MIDI in Pro Tools. You would have to look around.Īs far as Logic - well since the software is tied to Apple hardware, if they keep upgrading Logic and you don't stay current with hardware and software, at some point there is going to be Logic XIII or something which will require a newer mac than what you have.Īs far as the perceived better aspects of MIDI in Logic / Cubase or the ease of audio editing in Pro Tools - ya all that stuff matters, but not really. Upgrades for other DAW's are probably about the same. That is what Apple arrived at for Logic, and Pro Tools knocked down their upgrade price to about that figure. I am guessing that most manufacturers consider an upgrade to be about $199. They all have different features, and all have some cool things about them. Now if you have PT 11 right now, and like the power and features but you are sick of AVID's upgrade scheme, sick enough to consider jumping DAW's, then you have to open up your scope beyond Logic X (IMO and I use PT 11 and Logic X right now). At any rate, the upgrade is going to cost you $199 it looks like. Now they are are on PT 12.1 so that is what you would end up with and it has a couple new bells and whistles beyond PT 11. If you have Pro Tools 10 and haven't upgraded to PT 11 - then switching to another DAW is sort of pointless as you haven't actually got to taste the much improved memory / cpu usage and audio engine in PT 11. I guess my opinion on this relates to what you have right now. ![]() Anyone have experience with making the jump from Pro Tools to Logic? How significantly is the change going to slow me down if I were to do that? Any other recommendations for another alternate DAW that is in the same ballpark as PT? What would be nice is to be able to use, at least for some time, both, as Logic has some advantages in using midi over PT ? Or maybe Apple does something similar and upgrading is just a fact of life.Thoughts? Maybe do the most recent PT upgrades, because from what I hear PT 11 just has some upgrades worth getting. So point is, I'm looking at the possibility of adding logic pro x to the mix at some point down the road. I love pro tools but the constant upgrade path is, for me, getting expensive and somewhat annoying. Or have to buy the software all over again. It's time for another Pro Tools upgrade, but now AVID have something akin to a subscription plan where if you pay $200 annually you get all the most recent current uploads. ![]()
